Thornbury Castle was once owned by Henry who stayed here with his wife, Anne Boleyn. Now you have a chance to experience a little of what life was like for this great king … and you will be the only ‘royal residents’ in the castle. You could be excused for regarding the other hotel guests as your ‘subjects’!
The Castle Experience is a two night break in the Duke’s Bedchamber in which Henry and his queen slept. Located in the tower of the south wing, this bedchamber is octagonal with a four-poster bed and is reached via the original circular stone staircase, exactly as it would have been when Henry and Anne went to bed.
You will be treated like royalty from the moment you arrive to the moment you leave.
Dinner on one night will be a fabulous 5 course Royal Gala Dinner. Seated on your ‘thrones’ at your own table on the Gallery, with chalices of tumbling fruit, you’ll feel every bit the king and queen of the castle. The scroll menu will feature authentic dishes from the Tudor period, recipes from Hampton Court during Henry’s reign, especially created for you. (Naturally, if there’s something that doesn’t take your fancy, we shall gladly change it.)
Royal Gala Dinner Menu (In Henry’s day, a course was referred to as a ‘remove’.)
4th remove Sergeant of the King’s Side of Fat Deer
5th remove Thornbury Castle Date and Walnut Pudding
6th remove Local area Cheese and breads
Wine will be served in goblets.
Dinner on the other night will be in the historic atmosphere of the Tower Dining Room, a unique, hexagonal room with large, imposing arrow-slit windows and magnificent open fireplace.
